New research from Informa Telecoms & Media shows that high-definition television (HDTV) increases it’s household penetration. We love HD content and TVMOBiLi have supported streaming in full HD (1080p) for years, it is great to see that the industry is catching up :)

Key findings

• 27% of the world’s TV households currently have a SMART TV or HD-ready TV set

• By the by end-2017, 57% of global TV households will have an HD- ready set

• By end-2017 half of the world’s digital TV households will be actively viewing HD broadcasts

• Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV) will have a presence in just 0.5% of global TV households by the end of the forecast period.

The rise and forecasted rise has in HD TV has been impressive. In 2005, HDTV-ready sets were present in just 3% of the world’s TV households.

Since then HDTV has taken off quickly, benefiting from much reduced set/equipment prices, a wide range of HD channels, gaming console support and the rise on demand channels.

In Europe, for example, the number of ‘film’ channels in HD increased from 55 to 144 during 2009 to 2012. This meant they accounted for 20% of all 274 HD channels in 2009, but this had fallen to 15% of the 941 total in 2012.

Ultra High Definition TV (UHDTV) is set to be under represented within HD TV broadcasting. If you are lucky enough to have a UHDTV then no fear. TVMOBiLi already supports UHDTV streaming so sit back, relax and fasten your seatbelts.
